Misconceptions About Alternative Medicine -- By Mercy M. James

Medical marijuana or MMJ has been used for decades now to help people afflicted with serious medical conditions that include, but are not limited to glaucoma, cancer, epilepsy, AIDS, and MS (Multiple Sclerosis). As one of the most effective agents that help people cope with chronic pain, medical marijuana offers patients relief from extreme discomfort by alleviating their symptoms.
Understanding the science behind the effectiveness of marijuana is important in order to dispel these myths and make a well informed choice about what it truly offers. When administered under the supervision of a qualified and competent doctor or medical practitioner, medical marijuana reduces the pain and nausea that various health problems cause. Scores of people believe that medical marijuana is extremely addictive and it increases the dependency on the drug.
Research indicates that there is no evidence to support this belief because to start with, medical cannabis does not even have any chemicals that may trigger addiction in people who use it as a part of their treatment process. Then there are other misconceptions that MMJ may also lead to the use of hard drugs such as cocaine and like the former, this is also just a misconception. While medical marijuana can be smoked, this is not the only way that it can be used.
Right from prescription drugs and pills that contain synthetic forms of medical marijuana to other alternate treatment methods, cannabinoids such as THC can be delivered to the body without smoking MMJ. The flowers and leaves can be soaked in a mixture of alcohol to extract the cannabinoids in marijuana. This infusion can either be added to drinks and food or absorbed through skin patches and in this form; it takes MMJ as little as a half hour to produce the desired effect. The active components can also be transferred into cooking oil and butter by simmering the plant in them for several hours. This is usually used to bake cookies and brownies or make other types of food that a patient might find appetizing.
Thought there are tests that show that Medical cannabis can cause short term memory loss in some patients who are undergoing treatment, the truth is that the effect is only temporary. Medical marijuana neither reduces their intelligence nor does it affect their long term memory. Though medical cannabis is an all-natural substance that is obtained from plants, the misconceptions about it are quite controversial and baseless.
Colorado is one of the states that has legalized Medical Marijuana for use as a medicine. For more information visit the Denver dispensary Kind Love website today.

Energy Medicine - What You Should Know -- By Carly Nuday

Many people seeking health and wellness are turning to alternative methods and 'energy medicine' after either being failed by Western medicine, or in opposition to the practices and failings of Western medicine itself. But in an Information Age where there is an abundance of misleading, contradicting, and unclear messages, it becomes important to know some truth about energy medicine and how its discoveries might aid your own personal health and wellness.
The human energy system and bio-energetics have been observed using various diagnostic tools and photographic imaging technologies such as advanced bio-feedback devices, bio-scans, Kirlian cameras and electro-photonic aura imaging, and poly-interference photography (PIP). These methods usually involve measuring frequencies of electrical output at various points of the body, or create images based on the different frequencies emitted by the body's energetic systems. These different frequencies are converted into visible light, providing a viewable contrast of the differences in the quality of energy. Technologies such as PIP and the various bio-scans on the market are able to give us workable comparable models and real time imaging. These technologies also provide additional evidence of the existence of a "venous" energy system, discovered in the 1960's and practiced in Traditional Chinese Medicine for thousands of years as the meridian system in acupuncture. These images also support the ancient India system of "chakras" (Sanskrit for 'wheel') or "energy centers", where meridians or channels of energy intersect, creating a spinning energy center at these points. The strongest and most prominent chakras are located along the spine. The discovery in Western science of the electrical axis along the spinal column present in embryonic development prior to the formation of the spine, brain, heart, or vessels, also lends support to this system.
It has now been demonstrated in Western science that physical dysfunction and symptoms are preceded by as much as weeks and even months, through viewable changes in the energetic systems of an individual. This has led many to the conclusion that the physical symptoms and expressions of illness or dysfunction are caused by the imbalance viewed in the energy systems.
As symptoms of physical dis-ease are preceded by the changes, disruptions, or disharmonies of the body's energy systems and field, it is logical to alleviate or prevent physical symptoms at their source by restoring the highly responsive energy systems of an individual to proper function, i.e. health and balance.
The human energy system is incredibly dynamic and complex. It is affected by past experiences and our perceptions of them, by traumatic events, our diets, lifestyles, environments, our relationships with our self and others, our spiritual health, other energies including electromagnetic energy fields and frequencies, and consciousness. To improve the function, health, and organization of the body's energy system, making long-lasting positive changes in these areas is effectual.
Much difficulty lies in really adopting and incorporating these changes into our life. The body's energy system both affects and is affected by our thoughts and mental processes, meaning that imbalances in our energy system can give rise to imbalances in our thought patterns, which in turn continue to drive the energetic imbalance which caused the negative thought patterns in the first place. Often people find themselves subject to and at the mercy of their mindstate, lifestyle, and emotions caused by imbalances in their thought patterns. Changing thought patterns, truly healing from traumatic events, permanently adopting lifestyle changes, and making changes to our environments can be exceptionally difficult. While many people truly want to experience such change, it can be so difficult that unfortunately we often only see those people succeed who are in such full expression of their physical symptoms that they have been faced with their own mortality and thus have a deeper level of motivation to truly incorporate such changes into their life and way of being. Humans, as creatures of habit, frequently experience resistance and difficulty into discarding negative habits and adopting more positive ones. Added to this is the fact that we live in a systemic polluted environment, where our water, air, and food, all contain formidable toxins for the body to contend with. Given these factors, many (if not all) individuals require greater assistance to positively affect and restore the balance of their energetic systems and field.
Western medicine offers very little to affect the energetic systems, and in fact is still catching up to its brother Western science, which has made great strides (among many an ignorant critic, even within its own community) in providing scientific evidence for many ancient and traditional systems and natural healing methods to affect the health of the body's energy systems. These include Ayurveda (ancient India), homeopathy, long distance healing, and acupuncture and the meridians of traditional Chinese medicine through the confirmation of the physical location of the meridian system, a.5-1.5 micron diameter tubule duct-like system in the body which carries high concentrations of hormones and bio-chemicals, and which are formed in development prior to the blood vessels and lymphatic systems. Discovered in the 1960's by Professor Kim Bong Han with repeat findings in Europe, the tubule system closest to the surface of the skin mirrors Chinese meridian charts dating back more than 3,000 years nearly perfectly. According to the Chinese, the meridians carry "Qi", a nutritive vital life force, within its vessels.
The key to understanding how to affect the energetic systems to such a degree as to cause a change that is long-lasting is in recognizing the patterning nature of our energy. Our thoughts are thought patterns, it has been said that of the 60,000 or so thoughts we have each day, over 90% are the same ones we had yesterday. When we have a negative thought, we typically repeat that thought roughly 400 times during one average waking cycle. Our minds, habits, behaviors, and ways of being are patterned ways of being, attracting similar circumstances, relationships, and people into our life. Indeed, pattern recognition is a critical part of human development and is observable everywhere in nature, from the Fibonacci spirals and golden mean ratios in flowers, plants, and animals, to the patterns in our DNA. Patterns are also observable as we view the structure and patterned arrangement of molecular formations and micro-clusters in water, which provide the basis for the popular yet controversial work on water crystals by Dr. Masaru Emoto and the predating work of Marcel Vogel, Norman Mikesell, and many other Water researchers. The patterns observable in water crystals directly relate to its quantity and quality of energy; generally speaking the more beautiful and geometrically complex the water crystal, the higher its quality and quantity of energy, which directly relates to its permeability, efficiency of conduction, and overall rate of function. Much of Dr. Emoto's work has focused on the ability of water to change its micro-cluster molecular formation based on the influence of conscious thought, intention, words, music, and prayer. The patterning nature of water is much like the patterns of bio-energy: following crystallographic patterns of geometric complexity in an instantaneous and highly responsive manner, to all external stimuli, including that of consciousness. For more information on water, I recommend a great documentary Water, The Great Mystery.
Among all known methods of positively affecting the body's energy system, both electro-magnetic and magneto-electric, it is generally accepted that consciousness has the greatest effect, whether it is the consciousness of the individual or the consciousness of a practitioner or healer. Although analytic and diagnostic tools are still being developed in this arena, in scientific studies the strength of consciousness is typically measured by the coherence, rate, and synchronization of brain wave patterns of both practitioner and patient. These are, essentially, measurements of the pattern of the brain's energy. Increase in coherence, decrease and steadiness in rate, and synchronization of brain waves are observable during states of what is considered "high consciousness" - usually in meditation by practiced meditators (including Eastern traditions and Shamanic trances) or during healing sessions by energetic or traditional healers. In modern society where the average attention span is roughly 6 seconds, few, if any, possess the consciousness training necessary to affect the patterning of the bio-energetic at its deepest level in order to achieve a truly higher state of function, health, and wellness, of body, mind, and spirit. For one could theorize that as our physical symptoms are expressions of disturbances in the energetic systems and fields, perhaps our thought processes, habits, and ways of being are expressions of our bio-energetic patterns as well. It would then stand to reason that changing our energetic systems and fields could affect us at the very deepest levels of our being - not just our experience of physical symptoms, but our experience of life, the experience of our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions.
Seeing a healer, taking up meditation, and working to increase your consciousness through varieties of methods are all wonderful steps to take in improving your life, but this is unfortunately an uphill battle approach that sees many fail. Our energetic patterns are so ingrained at our most primary level of being that attempting to repattern and redirect our bio-energetic systems and flows by making simple lifestyle changes and habitual adjustments can be one of the hardest things to do. Most healers are unable to penetrate the strong layers of the energy field of the body to reach its deeper levels of function and flows. Even acupuncture is working on lesser and most surfaced energy channels of the body, and using it to affect the 4 deeper levels of channel sets that penetrate organ systems. Learning to meditate can be long and difficult road, and it is not likely one will truly be able to consciously control and direct the body's energetic flows even through years of practice and/or formal training.
Obviously we must find ways to affect the patterns of the body's energetic systems and fields through means other than the average, or even inspired, methods of consciousness, energy therapy, or artificial frequencies. A truly natural and holistic approach is necessary, with the goal of affecting energetic patterns towards higher geometric complexity and beauty, and thus affecting the body's water, DNA, and systems towards higher function and health. Tools that amplify consciousness and transmit patterns of information that can penetrate the deepest layers of the bio-energetic system and be absorbed and assimilated by the body and its liquid crystal components are necessary for this task. Thankfully, some of the greatest scientific minds, including Tesla, Dinshah, Marcel Vogel, Wilhelm Reich, and so many others, left behind in their legacy hints and clues as to what sort of methods and approaches we must employ to truly heal ourselves amidst a time of such environmental contamination and struggle. Gratefully, in this day of the Information Age for those truly seeking answers, the truth is not that hard to find.

The Trampoline - Incredible Health Benefits -- By Michael Russell Platinum Quality Author

It's obvious that trampolining is good general exercise but in this article, we'll explore why it's of such a benefit to our health.

Exercise for the Cells

Toxins or poisons can congregate in the cells of the body for a number of reasons. They may have been introduced by ourselves, by smoking for example, or they may have entered through a cut or other broken skin, or just by entering through the nose or mouth. Some toxins are produced in the body during the normal course of the metabolic process. Most are fought by the immune system and removed naturally through organs such as the liver, kidneys, lung colon and skin in the form of urine, faeces, exhalation and sweat.

It is thought though, that the G force exerted on the body by the bouncing motion on a trampoline, helps to "push out" the toxins and while the body is, briefly, airborne the lower cell pressure permits the influx of nutrients and oxygen thus improving cell "exercise".

Bouncing for a Healthy Heart

Exercising on a trampoline has several benefits in terms of the body's cardiovascular system:

1. Increases strength and fitness of the muscles, especially of the legs, helping to lighten the load on the heart when pumping blood around the body

2. Increases oxygen availability throughout the body

3. Maintains a healthy body weight and lessens the likelihood of obesity

4. Aids lymphatic circulation

5. Reduces level of cholesterol and triglycerides

6. Stimulates the metabolism and digestive processes.

Bones of Steel

Well, perhaps not quite, but it has been shown that this sort of high impact exercise, improves the bone mineral content and therefore the density thus lessening the likelihood of fractures due to osteoporosis. Unlike other forms of high impact exercise such as jogging, the bounciness of the trampoline mat absorbs the down force and won't cause jarring of the load bearing joints or spine.

Motoring

Trampolining helps to develop motor skill because of the need to maintain both height and balance simultaneously while responding to gravitational forces. Thus, all sides of the body and brain are involved in the exercise.

You don't need a large trampoline to be able to benefit in the above ways. A small, portable one, known as a rebounder, will do just as well.

Sjogren Syndrome - Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment -- By Abdulmubeen Mundewadi Platinum Quality Author

Sjogren syndrome, also known as sicca complex, is a chronic autoimmune disorder characterized by xerostomia (dry mouth), xerophthalmia (dry eyes) and lymphocytic infiltration of the exocrine glands. Women are more affected by this condition than men. Common signs and symptoms include dry eyes, dry mouth, fatigue, muscular pains, dry skin, vaginal dryness, lymph node and parotid gland involvement, polyneuropathy and diseases of the kidney.

The Ayurvedic treatment of Sjogren syndrome is aimed at reducing the symptoms and treating the main pathology of the disease. Dry eyes can be treated using medicated eye drops containing Manjishtha (Rubia cordifolia), Saariva (Hemidesmus indicus), Haridra (Curcuma longa), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Chandan (Santalum album), Sphatik (Purified alum), Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), Rose water and Karpur (Purified camphor). A dry mouth is treated using medicines like Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Musta (Cyperus rotundus), Parpat (Fumaria vaillantii), Usheer (Vetiveria zizanioidis). Lymph node and parotid gland involvement is treated using medicines like Kachnaar-Guggulu, Triphala-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Patol (Tricosanthe dioica) and Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa). Muscular aches and joint pain can be treated using medicines like Trayodashang-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Vat-Gajankush-Ras and Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras.

Polyneuropathy and inflammation of the arteries can be treated using medicines like Kaishor-Guggulu, Tapyadi-Loh, Ekang-Veer-Ras, Chandrakala-Ras, Mahamanjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivadi-Churna and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani. Dry skin and vaginal dryness can be treated with the local application of medicated oils like Chandan- Bala-Laxadi oil, Mahanarayan oil, Mahamash oil, Mahasaindhavadi oil, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut and Shatadhout-Ghrut. Diseases of the kidneys can be treated using medicines like Chandraprabha-Vati, Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Gomutra-Haritaki and Punarnavadi-Guggulu.

The basic pathology of the disease relates to reduced or absent secretions from several glands and organs. In order to treat this, 'Snehan' therapy is given to the patients on a long term basis. This involves the oral use of high doses of milk and medicated ghee like Panch-Tikta-Ghrut, Yashtimadhuk-Ghrut and Dashmool-Ghrut. Butter can also be used for this purpose. The addition of Saindhav or Yav-Kshar to the medicated ghee increases the therapeutic properties of the medicines. The same medicines can also be used to massage the entire body.

Sjogren syndrome rarely shortens a patient's life span, however disability from the symptoms can be devastating. An early diagnosis of this condition and prompt initiation of treatment is therefore very important.

Can Sjogren's Syndrome Be Cured? -- By Allison Clarke Platinum Quality Author

When you have an illness you want a cure, but not all illnesses have cures. Take Sjogren's syndrome, for instance. This autoimmune disorder can be unpleasant and even dangerous for individuals who have it but is there a cure?

Treating Sjogren's Syndrome

Sjogren's syndrome with its classic primary symptoms of dry eyes and dry mouth is more likely to be treated than cured. There are many different approaches to treating the symptoms that an individual with this disorder may experience but these treatments depend on the specific symptoms that an individual presents with and the severity of these symptoms. There are even surgical procedures that are a possibility in some extreme cases.

In the end, the symptoms of Sjogren's syndrome are more likely to be managed than cured. These symptoms include dry eyes, dry mouth, painful and swollen joints, swollen salivary glands, dryness of the skin, and fatigue.

These symptoms may be addressed individually or collectively in some cases, but to begin with one must address the issue of dry mouth. Its severity could make eating or talking difficult if it is not addressed.

Dry mouth is a problem. Even if a person is still able to eat and speak then dry mouth can make the mouth a breeding ground for bacteria. Luckily, there are products with natural ingredients that can help to return some moisture to the mouth even as they kill bad bacteria.

These natural products can then aid in removing these bad bacteria from the mouth, helping to promote overall dental hygiene. Of course, this approach should only be used in conjunction with a proper dental care routine involving daily brushing and flossing. Natural products are more of an adjunct to this most basic yet crucial approach to dental care.

The keys to success in the battle against gum disease and most oral problems are hidden in nature. Fighting the bacteria that causes the problem is the first place to start and specific species of peppermint and spearmint oils are scientifically proven to be anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-microbial. Get your mouth in mint condition today!

Allison Clarke is an author and natural health enthusiast. This article covers some of her resent research on gum infection and how it relates to gum disease and your body's overall health.

Alternative Medicine - Naturopathic Doctors--- By Dr. Alexander Haskell, ND Platinum Quality Author

The term "alternative medicine" is loosely used to include any health practitioner who is not using the conventional or orthodox approach of drug prescriptions and considers their methods to be "natural." Yet can anyone practicing alternative medicine be considered a practitioner of medicine? Without a sound knowledge of human biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, I don't believe they should be.
The Art of Medicine
What might be the ideal, the highest form of this art, no matter what terms are used to describe it, whether it be alternative medicine, complementary medicine or holistic medicine?
Ideally the practitioner is knowledgeable about diseases and their diagnoses. This means deciphering their client's symptoms in relation to lab test results.
They must understand how and why health may slowly succumb to disease. Disease may take years and even decades to develop and during this interim the practitioner must witness their client's tendencies, to know ways of halting its progression and to assist the body to return to health once again. This is preventative medicine and is a very important component of alternative medicine.
A practitioner must know the reasons why health declines. These include the following:
  • Lack of nutrients including vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, proteins and fats, all required for health.
  • Lack of sufficient exposure to sunshine leading to vitamin D deficiency which underlies osteoporosis, some multiple sclerosis patients, low thyroid hormone symptoms, and others.
  • Lack of sleep and adequate rest leading to nervous exhaustion, adrenal deficiency, and a host of psychological problems.
  • Unremitting stress harms the nervous system and the mind.
  • Environmental chemicals and toxins are a burden to the body. They can damage RNA and DNA, and cause irritation and inflammation. One category of chemicals termed Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals interfere with normal endocrine and thyroid function.
  • Under-functioning detoxification pathways of the body.
  • Heavy metals leading to immunological dysfunction.
  • Poor bowel ecology which interferes with digestion and absorption. Bacteria, fungus and parasites can also exist.
  • Allergies, especially to foods, cause a number of chronic problems.
  • Silent, chronic infections are found in the gut, teeth, tonsils and scars. An infection can exist without either the client or the physician being aware of it.
InvestigationAlternative medicine is not simply controlling symptoms through whatever "natural" methods a practitioner uses.
Our bodies communicate to us through symptoms. Symptoms can result when the body isn't getting what it needs (nutrients), when there's a structural misalignment (chiropractic or osteopathic), when an emotion or experience has been suppressed and not dealt with (psychology), when there 's something in the body that needs to be removed (bacteria, fungus, etc.) or if there's a hormonal imbalance (thyroid & endocrine).
So our body may communicate in it's own language that something is wrong. "I need more rest," or, "I need more protein," or, "I need you to take life less seriously," or, "I need a break," or, "I need to do something I like to do for a change." Some symptoms are vague like fatigue and irritability while others are more specific like headaches and arthritis.
A low grade toothache is a simple example of what I am referring to. For someone with a very busy life their approach may be to take a pain killer hoping the nagging tooth ache will go away. But eventually they have to visit their dentist. The options then are to fill the tooth if the pain is due to decay, a root canal if the nerve is inflamed or the tooth is infected, or to simply pull it.
But often no one asks the question why. "What happened with my tooth? Why did this problem develop in the first place? What can I do to prevent another problem with my teeth?"
The tooth ache could be due to a lack of minerals, making the tooth susceptible to decay. Maybe a problem exists in the gut that inhibits the absorption of minerals from food. Maybe the system and the saliva are overly acidic causing some damage to the enamel of the teeth. Maybe the immune system is a little run down causing an increased susceptible to a tooth infection.
Ideally with any symptom or condition we should be asking why, and then to investigate the possibilities. Every symptom and every condition of the human body and mind have causes and a practitioner of alternative medicine must be familiar with this type of investigation.
This investigation includes the following:
  • A thorough physical examination
  • A review of their client's medical history and their family's medical history
  • Review of their lifestyle, what contributes to their health and what wears it down
  • An in-depth review of their condition, the circumstances around which the condition appeared and how it progressed
  • A review of their past and present eating habits
  • Their exposure to environmental chemicals and toxins
  • A comprehensive lab test panel
If someone considers themselves to be a practitioner of alternative medicine, they must be knowledgeable about human physiology, biochemistry, pathology, immunology, endocrinology, and psychology or they must be working as a member of a team whose purpose is to investigate the causes of their client's condition and to then apply therapies or protocols. I might add that therapies may include pharmacy and that anyone practicing alternative medicine should be familiar with the importance and necessary of sometimes applying a pharmaceutical. We understand the shortcomings of pharmaceuticals in that they counteract symptoms and do not address the cause yet to take an alternative stance without the knowledge of pharmacy is a very narrow and one-sided perspective.
The practice of medicine must be for the restoration of the client's health. In order to accomplish this there must be the knowledge of why and how the client slipped from a state of health into one of illness. The underlying philosophy of medicine is that the body is able to self-correct and to return to a state of health if it is provided the means. This requires that the practitioner of the art of medicine must also understands health and what contributes to health.
Do we treat disease? Yes, but primarily through supporting health.

Authentic Healing - The Most Basic Basics of Metaphysical You

The truth is, we are more than just what we can see, hear, touch, taste and smell. If you want the best chance of authentic healing you might find advantage in considering what that means. This article is an introduction to prod your curiosity and reason. We're not going to get all hocus-pocus. There's nothing more off-putting to a practical mind. Let's just begin to explore some known facts that leave the doorway to possibility open.
But first let me be clear about my intentions. It's not my role or my responsibility to convince you. You were born in charge of your mind. I was born in charge of mine. If it was my responsibility to change your mind, it would be mine, and I already have my own! My job is to present information for you to consider, and to assimilate into your experience in order to enhance your experience. Your free will has the power and choice, even over your mind, to select the path which leads to the outcome(s) you desire.
So, that said, let's look at the basic basics of metaphysical you. What do you consider metaphysical to mean? Many people who reject alternative approaches and alternative medicine in particular, consider the world of metaphysics to embrace realms of fancy, hocus-pocus, or at best, abstract theories which have no foundation in scientific fact and proven reality.
Let's consider the term metaphysical within the context of human experience. For our purpose, the meta part of metaphysical means beyond. The physical means concerning matter, material or the body. So, we're basically discussing topics concerning humans, which are beyond just the physical body. This shouldn't be too much of a stretch. When we see something very sad or disturbing on television we are moved. What is it that moves us? Nothing physical. It's a feeling, a perception and translation. What makes us laugh at a joke? Nothing physical. These are simple, everyday occurrences that point to elements of the human experience beyond just the physical. So in this sense we can accept that there is something about us and our make-up that goes beyond our physical, measurable make-up.
Now, let's take another most basic of basics. It has long since been proven by quantum physics, that sub-atomic particles are not matter as we generally take it to be. The smallest elements of matter, at the sub-atomic level are not physical at all. Even if we were small enough, we still wouldn't be able to touch them. They are energy, pure energy. So, we cannot get away from the fact that if we are all made up of molecules, which we are, and those molecules are made of atoms, which they are, then in turn the atoms are made of sub-atomic particles. And if sub-atomic particles are really just energy, it only stands to reason that ultimately, we are all just walking bundles of energy.
Here's where both challenge and opportunity lie together, two sides of the same coin. You may choose the challenge side of the coin that represents the current western viewpoint. This is that we are generally fixed and physical, and therefore unable to change without physical intervention, i.e. drugs and / or surgery. Or, you may choose the side of the coin supported by quantum physics. This suggests that there is still much to learn about our world and ourselves. You may agree that although we've learned a lot, as already noted above, there are pertinent questions still to be answered regarding our physicality and therefore our limitations.
Though we stand on the shoulders of giants, it is a hallmark of progressive science that new theories constantly update old viewpoints and understanding. This means that we dismiss alternative and energy medicine at our own cost. There are many brave, pioneering scientists and practitioners who are dedicating their lives to understanding healing on levels that go beyond conventional modalities. And there are many patients and seekers who walk beside them, benefiting from their work.
I am deeply grateful that I fall on the side of hope and excited exploration, especially in the laboratory of my own life. It's an exciting ride and I hope you too are encouraged to peer through the doorway of opportunity.

Alternative Medicine: When To Use It and Not

Some of the medical systems and therapies found on the alternative medicine list have been in service for thousands of years, in fact reaching back into prehistoric times to origins unknown. Some of these have remained unchanged for many centuries. Other entities in alternative medicine were a positive answer to the horrific early developments of allopathic medicine as it existed in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Others were the result of accidental discoveries in the relief or cure of certain ailments and health conditions. Modalities in alternative medicine range from highly efficacious to faulty, having no effect whatsoever to downright dangerous to human health. So how do you protect yourself from poor results, alas, life-threatening circumstances coming from the use of alternative medicine?
First, a bit about allopathic medicine.
This is your first step in determining whether alternative medicine is right for you in curing an ailment, pain management or any other health issue. Allopathic medicine has been so named due to its philosophy in treating for symptoms rather than restoring health from focusing on the causes of the ailment. Allopathic medicine is a biomedical entity, meaning it is highly specialized, its treatments are standardized and it is not holistic.
Albeit allopathic medicine holds first prize in having an incredibly large knowledge base about human health and disease. The system is empirically based, is scientific and its procedures rigorously tested. Allopathic medicine does have its dark side however and processes are not always in the best interest of the patient, especially since it is a for-profit industry and would go out of business if disease was eradicated.
An unlikely thing however, allopathic medicine wins the gold metal for its highly technical and effective procedures in medical emergencies and otherwise terminal conditions. Though it is not holistic and can be quite impersonal, the allopathic physician should always be consulted first for any medical condition which can have serious underlying problems.
Is Alternative Medicine No Good?
By all means, a resounding NO! Many medical systems and modalities outside of allopathic medicine are indeed highly efficacious and are great alternatives to the more expensive allopathic therapies and procedures. In non-emergency situations, alternative medicine can often provide equally effective, sometimes even better results without the side effects that often comes with chemical-based therapy.
Your alibi on the determination whether an alternative medicine is effective or is quackery comes from education. Also, what may work for one person may not work for another since each of us are different in our own right. Allopathic medicine has been standardized and through experimentation what a treatment should be is based on what is known to work on most people, caustic as it may be. Alternative medicine is not like this. It is composed of health systems and therapies which are individualized according to the patient and his needs.
Allopathic Medicine and Alternative Health
Though there are many reasons why an alternative health modality may not meet the approval of the American Medical Association (AMA,) the three main reasons are:
  • It either has not been tested or is not subject to scientific experimentation.
  • It has been tested and proven to be faulty, ineffective and/or detrimental in some way.
  • It has been tested but the results are unpredictable or is not useful to allopathic medicine.
Unless a modality has been proven to be a fake or is dangerous, and the health condition is not life threatening, there is little reason why it would be harmful to try it - especially those which have time-tested and have been known to produce positive results. Allopathic medicine does refer patients to complimentary therapy and at times alternative medicine. An example would be complementing or even replacing conventional chemical-based medications with hypnotherapy - a modality that has been proven to work on pain management.
Conclusion:
Alternative medicine can be used with or as a replacement for allopathic medicine if your regular physician deems it proper and you have been cleared of any detrimental underlying health issues. Common sense and education goes a long way. There is a vast quantity of resources out there in just about any health issue and their alternatives. Any modality or alternative medicine that has been around for a long time is probably a good source. They are often more thorough than allopathic medicine, are more personal and based on your individual needs. They focus on your whole being making them holistic.
Top rule here: Always see your regular physician first and follow his advice!

Alternative Medicine: What Is It?

What is alternative medicine? It is a phrase that has been tossed around more and more in the media, the bookstores, and increasingly, the doctor's office, but how often does anyone say what alternative medicine is?
Theoretically, alternative medicine is any form of medicine that does not fit with in the scientific framework of western medicine. Once a form of medicine has been proven scientifically effective, and a theory has been determined to explain in the language of western medicine why it is effective, it should no longer be considered alternative
Unfortunately, after the theory comes the politics. In reality, in the United States, alternative medicine is any form of medicine that has not been accepted as scientifically valid by the American Medical Association and the United States Government. In other countries different official bodies will determine what is and is not alternative medicine. In the United States, massage is alternative medicine. In Canada massage is conventional medicine, and as such, highly regulated.
Would you believe that according the US government's National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, vitamins are a complementary or alternative medicine (depending on how they are used) that have not yet been proven to have any greater effect on the human body then a placebo? Personally, I'd like to know if they would like to be treated for scurvy with a placebo. I'll stick with vitamin C. There are theoretical uses for vitamins that have not yet been fully proven, but that does not make the proven effects any less scientifically valid.
At the same time, just because someone claims what they offer is medicine does not make it true. Herbal supplements are not regulated, and may not fully disclose their ingredients. They certainly will not tell you about any dangerous interaction with your heart medication!
Of course, you can ask an expert, but keep in mind that there are many kinds of alternative medicine, an acupuncturist is not necessarily trained in herbs, and your primary care physician probably won't be trained in any of them.
If you are interested in using alternative medicine, either for a specific problem, or simply improve your overall health, it's probably best to first research what kinds of alternative medicine you are interested in, and speak with you doctor about whether or not she will be willing to work with an alternative medicine practitioner. Then find a practitioner who has had training in that specific area of alternative medicine. Most forms of alternative medicine are not licensed in the United States, so ask where they went to school, and how long they have been practicing. Then they can work with your doctor to make sure you get the care you need, without any unexpected side effects.
Some forms of alternative medicine that might be worth looking into are:
Oriental medicine: Oriental medicine is the only form of alternative medicine that is truly comparably to western medicine as a complete system of medicine. Oriental medicine is based on several theories developed thousands of years ago and first elaborated on in the Yellow Emperor's Classic, between three and five thousand years ago. Oriental medicine includes the practices of massage, acupuncture, herbal therapy, qi gong, and several others. Tradition Chinese Medicine is a variant of oriental medicine specific to China. It is the only variant of oriental medicine the can be found with relative ease in the United States. In many parts of Asia, oriental medicine is still considered the standard of medical care and western medicine is 'alternative.'
Herbal therapy: Herbal therapy is probably the most common form of alternative medicine found in the United States, and quite possibly one of the riskiest. While most of the conventional medicines doctors prescribe today were derived from herbs, the herbal supplements commonly on sale have no common dosages, may contain fillers, and will rarely warn of side effects. While herbs can be used to treat everything that medication can, and possibly quite a bit more, make sure you speak with a trained herbalist before taking any. They can tell you what dosage is safe, what suppliers are worth using, and any potential side effects.
Homeopathy: Homeopathy was developed in the 1800's by two doctors who noticed that quinine, the only medicine capable of treated malaria, caused symptoms of malaria in healthy people who were given it. They theorized that like would cure like, so caffeine which normally causes wakefulness, would be used to help someone who was not sleeping through the night, sleep better. Homeopathy is probably the only alternative medicine that is safe to try without speaking with an expert, because the active substance is so dilute that it is not possible to over dose, or incur side effects on the amounts in the local health food store, never mind the few bottles you would keep in your home. At the same time, it is still best to consult a homeopath to be sure that what your taking will work for what you need.
Massage: Massage is the use of hands or tools to manipulate the muscles and tendons. The two most common uses of massage are to ease aches and pains, and for stress relief. While there are many conditions that massage will obviously not help with (diabetes, for instance), there are many that it is surprisingly effective on, such as eating disorders, fibromyalgia, and carpal tunnel syndrome. In addition, almost any muscular injury can be treated with massage to prevent scar build up, speed healing, and increase a restricted range of motion. There are many different forms of massage therapy, including Swedish Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Pre-Natal Massage, Shiatsu, Thai Massage, Lomi Lomi, Medical Massage, Chair Massage, Aromatherapy Massage and Hot Stone Massage. If you go to a massage therapist for a medical condition, make sure they are trained in Medical Massage. Some states have licensing programs for massage therapists now, as do most European countries. If you live in an area that has licensing, make sure the therapist you go to is licensed.
Other forms of alternative medicine include: energetic healing, aromatherapy, Rolfing, cranial-sacral therapy, and most forms of holistic medicine.
I am a trained massage therapist, and grew up surrounded by alternative medicine. I entered massage training almost by accident, and found that I had fallen into the place I truly belonged. I believe that healthy human contact is the most powerful medicine there is. If you're interested, you can learn more about me, and my massage practice at [http://www.healinghandshealthylife.com]
